About the Pilgrim Welcome Service
The Pilgrim Welcome Service is a CCoP program run in collaboration with the Spanish Federation of Camino Associations (FEAACS) to provide our members with the opportunity to serve on the Camino as volunteer “welcomers” in the Albergue de Peregrinos in Lugo, on the Camino Primitivo.
About Lugo
Lugo is a major stopping point on the Camino Primitivo, and one of the Camino’s cultural capitals. With a Roman Wall, an historic cathedral, a city full of plazas, great food, and traditional shops, Lugo has much to offer pilgrims and volunteers.

When will the program run?
Lugo Pilgrim Welcome Service will run between May 1 and October 31, 2027. This is pilgrim high season in Lugo, and expected to be very busy with the 2027 Jacobean Holy Year.
The Role of our Volunteers
Pilgrim Welcome Service volunteers will provide a warm welcome, showing pilgrims to their bunks, and helping them with their practical needs, like finding the nearest grocery store or pharmacy, and be good listeners to those who want to talk. Our volunteers are not hospitaleros but rather “welcomers” who will work alongside the paid staff of the albergue.
Lugo Albergue de Peregrinos
The Albergue de Peregrinos de Lugo is part of the network of Xunta de Galicia albergues and volunteers will work alongside contracted employees at the albergue who are responsible for general operations, cleaning, and checking in pilgrims.
The Albergue de Peregrinos de Lugo is open to pilgrims from 1pm -10 pm and lies just inside the Roman walls of Lugo’s compact city centre.
The 4 storey albergue has bunks for 36 pilgrims in two shared dormitories.
Volunteers are provided with accommodation in a shared private room, located on the top level of the albergue.
Who are we looking for?
• Friendliness, self-reliance, and a willingness to support pilgrims are the key qualifications. We’re looking for experienced pilgrims who can relate to the day-to-day trials, tribulations, and joys of walking a Camino, being a pilgrim, and sharing that experience with others in pilgrim albergues.
What are the volunteer commitments?
• Volunteers commit to serve a Quincena (a 15 or 16 day Period at the beginning or end of the month) during the period May 1 to October 31.
• Volunteers are responsible for their own travel expenses and arrangements to/from Lugo as well as food and incidentals while volunteering in Lugo.
